Formula One racing is one of the most glamorous sports in the world today. The car racing championship grew out of European GPs but it took until 1950 for a set of rules to be agreed to, with the first F1 races happening in 1950. While the championship takes in various throughout the world, there is one constant - the motor companies who annually invest millions into their team. The famous Formula One firms include Ferrari, Williams and McLaren although recently Lotus and Virgin have also participated. The drivers have always been the stars the audiences want to see, from the unlucky Stirling Moss through to the genius of Ayrton Senna.

An introduction to car racing

Also known as automobile racing, car racing involves racing cars for competition and is by far one of the most popular and most viewed sports in the world. It's believed car racing started almost as soon as the first gasoline-powered vehicle was invented and it's thought the world's first car race in 1894 by a French magazine called Le Petit Journal. The first race track ran from Paris to Rouen and attracted top motor manufacturers like Peugeot and De Dion and numerous other automotive owners. Although auto racing continued to progress over the years, it wasn't until the 1930s that the first pure racing automobiles were built, with high performance vehicles from auto manufacturers such as Bugatti and Delage transforming the feel and style of car racing forever.

There are many famous car racing events every year which each have a different fan base around the world and are each set in different locations. The FIA WTCC is one of the top racing events in the bursting motor sports timetable. First formed in 1987, the WTCC series is held all around the world including in prestigious locations such as Great Britain, Czech Republic, Italy and Morocco. Other key motoring events include the Indianapolis 500 the Gumball Rally and the Rallye Automobile Monte-Carlo . The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series and the NASCAR Nationwide Series are also two of the top car racing championships.
